Superintendent Gary Neal's letter to Sequim School District employees on August 31, 2016, the first day of school:

    Dear Colleague,

Last night culminated my participation with the opening events at Sequim Middle School, Sequim High School, Greywolf Elementary, and Helen Haller Elementary, with Olympic Peninsula Academy’s Otter Days coming up shortly.

At Sequim Middle School’s New Family Orientation I saw lots of new staff faces along with our new families which reminded me of the quote from François de la Rochefoucauld, “The only thing constant in life is change.”

Watching the freshmen students at Sequim High School’s Link Crew Orientation hit home afresh for me, even after thirty-four years of secondary experience, as first time high schoolers and first time high school parents anxiously navigated their way around a brand new experience.

And then, of course, the genesis of public education, the elementary schools!  It was effortless for me to get caught up in the welcoming spirit at Greywolf and Haller Elementary Schools and the embrace of caring that is easily recognized upon entering their buildings.

I applaud each building for all the blood, sweat, and tears that went into making the first impression for children and parents so wonderful. As I have mentioned before, “it is difficult to make things look easy” and I realize how much work went into the preparation of these activities.

The word synergy was the first thing that came to mind while visiting the four campuses coupled with each building’s message of hope.  I saw smiling faces on students, parents, grandparents, siblings, and of course, staff!  Each building has a unique culture built upon caring yet accountability as evidenced in colorful and inviting sign-up booths, student accounts, Skyward entry, school “bling”, afterschool activities, and so on.

Our students, as well as our community, are very fortunate to have such wonderfully talented and nurturing folks working with the children of Sequim.  It truly makes me humble and appreciative to be your superintendent!

I recognize all your efforts to make each child’s experience unique and rewarding.

    Here’s to a great year!

    Sincerely, Gary
